Nemesis Nick's Birthday Outing 2015 Midi Report

Date: Wednesday 30 September 2015
Venue: Thorpe Park
Who Went: Just me

N.B. Any use of "today" in this report means Wednesday 30 September 2015.

Introduction
Wednesday 30 September 2015 was my 44th birthday. Just like last year, I decided to spend the day at Thorpe Park. During September booked a park entry ticket in advance, as well as the required combination of train tickets from Bath Spa to Staines and back. For the fifth year running I had a special birthday T-shirt of my own design printed, this time at John Moore Sports, Bath, about a fortnight before my birthday.

Getting to Thorpe Park
It was necessary for me to wake up exceptionally early at 4:00, to get ready and catch the 05:41 train from Bath Spa to Reading, followed by the 07:04 train to Wokingham and 07:26 train to Staines. Having reached Staines at 7:56 I enjoyed a much-needed cappuccino and butter croissant at Waitrose Café. Soon after 9:30 I caught the Thorpe Park Express bus from Staines Bus Station to Thorpe Park.

Welcome to Thorpe Park
When I reached Thorpe Park at 9:47 I collected my pre-booked ticket from the Advance Ticket Collection point and joined the back of the main queue to enter. Just before 10:00 the front shutters rose and visitors funnelled through the ticket check point.

Morning Riding
Once admitted I began with one go on the giant swing Rush, which was walk-on at the time. A mega fun ride to start my birthday visit to Thorpe Park. My first roller coaster ride of the day was Colossus, which was walk-on at the time. I managed to get on the first train of the day, and sat in the second row. Its vertical loop, horizontal corkscrew and other features made this another exciting ride. Afterwards I had a second go on Colossus, this time in the front row. I had to wait two runs for a front row seat. That ended up being my final go of the day on Colossus. My next ride was Zodiac. This giant wheel spins on an angle at high speed. Although great fun, once was enough for me; two goes on this straight off would make me giddy.

Next I enjoyed two goes on SAW - The Ride. This roller coaster featuring a vertical drop and loop was great fun, but I question the need for the lighting effects and air currents in the building as you wouldn't get those in a real factory sawmill. The waiting time was minimal for both goes. Soon after my second go SAW - The Ride closed due to high winds. At the time I felt glad I rode it when I did, but I've no idea whether or not it reopened later. From around midday until early evening I felt warm enough going around in just my T-shirt and shorts.

I approached Slammer, and got on to its very next run. Although not as scary as I feared, once was enough for now. I never returned to this later. After that, the wait for Nemesis Inferno was 25 minutes, so I decided not to go on it. Stealth was closed due to a problem; engineers were hoping to have it working later but no guarantee could be given yet. Tidal Wave was also closed. Eventually I got to Flying Fish, which was walk-on, so I decided to ride that next. This family coaster is undeniably tame, but nonetheless still worth riding to say I had been on it today. My one go on Flying Fish now was my only go on it all day.. As I left Flying Fish I met Planenut from the RCCGB, we spoke to each other for a few minutes. He noticed I had a birthday T-shirt again and liked it.

Lunch at The Coffee Shack
Afterwards I tried to get some lunch. Roast and Relish, where I most favoured going, was closed. I ended up going to The Coffee Shack in the Dome for a toasted chicken and pesto panini and a bottle of Sprite. I put my birthday card on my table for the duration of my lunch.

Afternoon Riding
After lunch I headed for Depth Charge, as it's quite a gentle ride. Once there I enjoyed one go per slide left to right (as viewed from the top). Next I approached Swarm. When this coaster opened in March 2012, all its seats faced forwards, but at the start of the 2013 season, the back two rows were reversed to face backwards to the direction of travel. I enjoyed one go backwards followed by one go forwards. The waiting time to ride backwards was longer than I'd have liked, but it was worth it. Thankfully I didn't have to wait so long to ride it forwards.

After that I fancied a few water rides. Having put on my all-in-one splashsuit to prevent me getting wet I enjoyed one go on Storm Surge. I took the one remaining seat in a dinghy containing other riders. One member of their group also happened to be celebrating his birthday that day and thus the others in the boat sang "Happy birthday" on behalf of me and that other person. Next I enjoyed one go on Rumba Rapids followed by two goes on Logger's Leap log flume. Having left Logger's Leap I removed my splashsuit and didn't go on any more water rides the rest of the day.

There were still plenty of rides I'd not been on. With less than an hour of riding time left I selected the ones I most wanted to ride, starting with one go on the indoor roller coaster X. I sat in the back row. Although worth riding to say I'd ridden it this visit, I wouldn't rate it highly. Next I thoroughly enjoyed the roller coaster Stealth. Going up the vertical lift hill, over the top and down the vertical drop gave a mega fun ride, albeit over too quickly for my liking. Reluctantly I limited myself to just one go as closing time was fast approaching. Finally I just had time for two goes on the inverted coaster Nemesis Inferno before the Park closed at 17:00. The ride was walk-on for both goes; I sat in row 5 for my first go and row 6 for my second go. The perfect ride to end my day at Thorpe Park. It was now time to leave the Park; on my way out had a few more photos taken of me. I also met Planenut and spoke to him again whilst heading for the Park exit.

Returning to Staines
Having finally left Thorpe Park just before 17:30 I walked across to the bus stop and joined the bus queue. I managed to get on the Thorpe Park Express bus which turned up at 17:49. Since it went via Chertsey, the journey to Staines took longer than the direct route from Staines to Thorpe Park in the morning. It finally reached Staines Bus Station at 18:38.

Birthday Dinner
My birthday fun continued back in Staines town centre. Around 18:50 I went to Harvester for my celebratory dinner. Once seated I placed my birthday card on the table and chose what I wanted to eat and drink. Eventually I ordered 7oz gammon steak (which included a fried egg, a pineapple slice, fries, peas and half a tomato, plus a fill-it-yourself salad bowl) for main course and one pint of Carling to drink. For dessert I had Honeycomb Explosion Sundae. Since it was my birthday, my sundae arrived with a burning candle in the top. The waiter and waitress who brought it sang "Happy birthday" to me.

Journey Home
Having left Harvester at 20:34 I walked to Staines railway station. Once there I caught the 20:53 train to Reading, whereupon there was time for me to buy a takeaway Americano before catching the 22:12 train to Bath Spa. I finally reached Bath Spa at 23:21 and home about ten minutes later.

Highlights
Excellent weather, mainly sunny all day and hot for the time of year during the afternoon.
High overall ride count.
Satisfaction of riding all seven coasters in a single trip.
Unexpectedly meeting Planenut from the RCCGB just before lunch and again as I was leaving the Park after the rides closed.
Celebratory birthday dinner at Harvester in Staines town centre in the evening.

Lowlights
Tidal Wave closed so I was unable to ride that.
Bus journey from Thorpe Park to Staines in the evening took longer than desired.

Summing Up
Altogether a mega fun day out at The Nation's Thrill Capital to mark my 44th birthday. The weather was dry and mainly sunny all day, and sufficiently hot for just T-shirt and shorts from around midday. A summer-like day when it was officially autumn. Ride queues varied depending on the ride and time of day, but I tended to pick rides which were walk-on or had very short queues, even though that meant leaving Stealth and Nemesis Inferno to the end of the day. It was really satisfying to ride all seven coasters (Colossus, SAW - The Ride, Flying Fish, Swarm (backwards and forwards), X, Stealth, Nemesis Inferno) again. Just one point about the seven coasters, they're all steel. Come on Thorpe Park, get some wood! It was also great riding other non-coaster rides I first rode on previous trips, including Rush, Zodiac, Storm Surge, Rumba Rapids, and Logger's Leap. It's a pity I didn't have time to ride Detonator: Bombs Away, but never mind. Closing time always seems to come too soon at Thorpe Park. An unexpected added bonus was meeting Planenut from the RCCGB just before lunch and on my way out of the Park at closing time. Although we didn't have one ride together (which was a pity) it was great to talk to each other both times we met. The celebratory evening dinner at Harvester in Staines town centre was the grand finale to this special day.

Many people liked my self-designed birthday T-shirt. Some were puzzled when they first saw the front,` until I showed the back. Wearing that throughout the day added to the fun of celebrating my birthday.

Nemesis Nick's Birthday Outing 2015

Date: Wednesday 30 September 2015
Venue: Thorpe Park
Who Went: Just me

N.B. Any use of "today" in this report means Wednesday 30 September 2015.

Introduction
Wednesday 30 September 2015 was my 44th birthday and, as usual, my biggest decision was where to go to mark the occasion. The last two years my birthday outing consisted of a day at Thorpe Park followed by a celebratory evening meal at Harvester, Staines. Both were amazing days out, so by the start of September 2015 I strongly favoured doing exactly the same again this year. Early September I saved myself money by booking an advance web ticket to Thorpe Park. Getting Advance train tickets from Bath Spa to Staines and back was a bit tricky this time. The same day as I booked my ticket to Thorpe Park I managed to get an Advance train ticket for my homeward journey from Staines to Bath Spa in the evening, but not my outward journey in the morning. After some experimentation later in September I eventually managed to get an Advance ticket for Bath Spa to Wokingham (changing at Reading), plus an anytime single ticket for Wokingham to Staines. Obviously that ticket arrangement necessitated an extra change of train at Wokingham on my way to Staines in the morning, but that didn't bother me too much. For the fifth year running I had a special birthday T-shirt of my own design printed, this time at John Moore Sports, Bath, about a fortnight before my birthday.

Getting to Thorpe Park
It was necessary for me to wake up at 4:00, which for me is exceptionally early. From Bath Spa I caught the 05:41 GWR train to Reading. Having arrived there I had just a few minutes' wait for the 07:04 GWR train to Wokingham. Finally I caught the 07:26 South West Trains train to Staines. I reached Staines at 7:57, more than two hours before Thorpe Park was due to open! Meanwhile I enjoyed a much-needed cappuccino and butter croissant at Waitrose Café in Two Rivers Retail Park, Staines. Soon after 9:30 I caught the Thorpe Park Express bus from Staines Bus Station to Thorpe Park.

Welcome to Thorpe Park
I reached Thorpe Park at 9:47 and immediately went to the Advance Ticket Collection point to collect my pre-booked ticket. Without further ado I joined the back of the main queue, which was now quite long. Just before 10:00 the front shutters rose and visitors funnelled through the ticket check point.

Morning Riding

Rush
Once admitted I began with the giant swing Rush. Both swings were in action, and I managed to get straight on to it. This S&S Power Screamin' Swing has been operating since 27 May 2005. The swing went forwards and backwards a little to start with, rising higher and higher on subsequent forwards and backwards passes. Eventually it swung really high forwards and backwards. Finally the forwards and backwards swings became low ones, until the swing stopped completely. A mega fun ride to start my birthday visit to Thorpe Park, I remained quiet the whole time unlike when I first rode it in June 2005. My one go ended up being my only go on here all day.

Colossus
My first roller coaster ride of the day was Colossus. This Intamin AG Looping Coaster (Colossus) has been operating at Thorpe Park since 22 March 2002. According to the Roller Coaster Database (RCDB), it is still one of just two coasters of this model worldwide.

Being as it was early in the day I was able to walk straight up to the station. I got there in time for the first train of the day, and sat in the second row. Once despatched, the train climbed the lift hill, went around a bend and down a steep hill, around the vertical loop and under a bridge. Next it went up half a loop, before doing a U-turn whilst inverted and down another half loop. After that it went back under same bridge as earlier, up and down a bit, along a flat section, and into the horizontal corkscrew. Finally the train headed around the end bend on an angle, along the home straight and back to the station. Altogether a fun ride, I was totally relaxed and didn't scream at all throughout the ride, unlike when I first rode it in June 2005.

Of course, once wasn't enough. Having left via the exit path, I headed straight back to the entrance for a second go on Colossus. This time I wanted to ride it in the front row, and thus had to wait two runs for a front row seat. Riding in the front row meant I had an unobstructed view of the way ahead from start to finish. This ended up being my final go of the day on Colossus as I didn't return to it later in the day.

Zodiac
A kind of big wheel made by Huss. It is similar to Enterprise at Alton Towers which I rode during Loopathon Alton Towers in 2005 and 2006. I sat in car 1 and the door was locked shut. The cars hang from above; you sit inside one but there is no restraint. The ride set off clockwise. As it picked up speed, the cars flung outwards, and eventually the whole disc tilted so everyone travelled around a circle at high speed on an angle. At this speed, centrifugal force kept riders firmly in place, hence no need for a restraint. I noticed it was almost impossible to lift my feet or arms when going full speed. Towards the end the disc returned to the horizontal position, the ride slowed down and the cars returned to their normal dangling position. A mega fun ride, but once at a time is enough for me. Two goes on this straight off would make me really giddy. I never returned to this ride later in the day.

SAW - The Ride
This Gerstlauer Euro-Fighter (Custom) has been operating since 14 March 2009. It is one of ten coasters of this model currently operating worldwide. SAW - The Ride was almost walk-on at the time. When it was my turn I sat in the far right seat of the front row. The car set off through the building, I noticed a dip in there. Once outside the building the car worked its way around corners to the vertical lift. The car climbed the vertical lift, went down the beyond vertical first drop, around the vertical loop and back to the station. Altogether a fun ride, I was totally relaxed the whole journey and did not scream at all. However I still call the lighting effects and air currents in the building unnecessary overkill. You wouldn't get those in a real factory sawmill. Why do they bother having them here?

Afterwards I had a second go on SAW - The Ride. Once again the waiting time was minimal. This time I sat in the far right seat of the back row.

Soon after I left the SAW - The Ride at the end of my second go, a member of staff said it had just been closed due to high winds. It was just as well I went on it when I did. I didn't return to it later, so I've no idea whether or not it reopened.

From around midday I felt warm enough going around in just my T-shirt and shorts. It remained warm enough for that the rest of the time I was in Thorpe Park.

Slammer
I fancied a go on Slammer next. There were just a few others waiting to ride it when I approached it. Just like the others already waiting, I got on to its very next run. Other riders sat in the same row as me. Once everyone was secured in their seats the ride began. The part of the ride with seats at both ends rose upwards before starting to flip over about its centre. During the flip, my end rose really high, over the top and back down again. I'm not sure how many cycles there were, but eventually the seat unit returned to horizontal whilst still near the top of the tower, before finally returning to ground level. My verdict: not as bad as I'd feared, but once for now was enough! I never returned to this later

The wait for Nemesis Inferno was now 25 minutes, so I decided not to go on it. I got to Stealth, but it was closed. There was a problem with Stealth; engineers were hoping to have it working later but no guarantee could be given at present. Tidal Wave was also closed. Suddenly I fancied going to Roast and Relish for lunch, but on the way there Flying Fish had a five minute waiting time, so I decided to go on that first.

Flying Fish
This Mack Rides Blauer Enzian originally operated as Space Station Zero from 1983 to 1989, and Flying Fish from 1990 to 31 October 2004. After being in storage during 2005 and 2006, it was brought back into service, still as Flying Fish, at the start of the 2007 season. According to the RCDB, this is one of seven coasters of this model currently operating worldwide. Unlike Thorpe Park's other six coasters, one ride consists of multiple laps of the track, although from my past experience the actual number you get seems to vary from turn to turn. I was able to get straight on to Flying Fish without having to queue, and this time one go consisted of three laps. This is undeniably a tame coaster, but nonetheless still worth riding to say I had been on it today. For now I limited myself to one go on Flying Fish, and didn't return to it later.

I passed a kebab place, they did kebab, chips and drink meal deals, but I didn't fancy that as I was likely to be having chips as part of my celebratory meal in Staines in the evening. My next stop was a jacket potato place in Angry Birds Land, I considered getting a filled jacket potato, but they weren't going to be ready for about 10 minutes.

I ended up going to The Coffee Shack in the Dome. When I got there at 13:15 I had toasted chicken and pesto panini and a bottle of Sprite. I put my birthday card on my table for the duration of my lunch.

Afternoon Riding
I was eager to return to riding as soon as possible after my light lunch, but didn't want to ride anything too boisterous too soon. Depth Charge seemed the ideal ride to go on shortly after lunch, as it's quite a gentle ride, so I began the afternoon by riding Depth Charge.

Depth Charge
Four open top wavy water coasters which you ride fully clothed in dinghies. These NV Aquatic slides were built in 1991. I enjoyed one go per slide left to right (as viewed from the top). My rigid insistence on sliding them in that order slowed me down slightly; on some goes I waited at the top for the person in front to go down my desired slide when I could have descended an alternative one.

Swarm
Thorpe Park's newest coaster, which opened 15 March 2012. This Bolliger & Mabillard Wing Coaster (Custom) is a model which has been in production since 2011. According to the RCDB, this is one of eight coasters of this model currently operating worldwide, and the second to enter operation. Its maximum height of 127' (38.7 m) makes it the fifth tallest coaster currently operating in the UK. It appears to me as though this coaster was themed around an air crash, due to the broken aeroplane on the ground and the station which resembles an air crash / fire damaged church with a missing roof. Originally all the seats faced forwards, but at the start of the 2013 season, the back two rows were reversed to face backwards to the direction of travel. I was determined to ride Swarm both backwards and forwards.

First go: backwards. The queue to set off from the left hand platform (as viewed facing direction of travel) was longer than I'd have liked, largely due to there being just two backwards facing rows. Determined to ride it backwards I patiently waited. When it was my turn I sat in the back row, and therefore had an unobstructed view of the track. The train climbed the lift hill, descended the steep first drop, climbed the next hill, flipped over at the top before going down again. This was followed by a loop, another flip-over and the rest of the course back to the station. Travelling backwards on a coaster was an unusual sensation, but I didn't find it as scary as the "Have you got the guts to brave it backwards?" slogan implies. It was definitely worth the longer-than-desired wait.

Second go: forwards. I set off from the left hand platform (as viewed facing direction of travel). Since there are far more forwards facing rows I faced a shorter wait this time. This ended up being my final go of the day on Swarm as I didn't have time to return to it later.

Storm Surge
This WhiteWater West water ride first opened in 2011. When I approached this ride I put on my all-in-one splashsuit to prevent me getting wet. Once ready I was able to take the one remaining seat in a round dinghy already containing other riders. One member of their group also happened to be celebrating his birthday that day and thus the others in the boat sang "Happy birthday" on behalf of me and that other person. The boat climbed the tall lift hill. Having reached the top, the dinghy floated down what is really a wide water slide all the way to the bottom, where there was a splash. Finally the boat sailed along a canal at the bottom, around a bend and back to the disembarkation point. Altogether this is a fun water ride. My only gripe was the water in the bottom of the dinghy; by positioning my feet at the highest point within the boat going uphill and downhill I just about managed to keep my feet above the water. One really needs Wellington boots to ride this. The attendants ought really to pump water out of the boats between rides, provided it doesn't take too long. This was my only go on Storm Surge all day.

Rumba Rapids
Being as I was already wearing my splashsuit, it made sense for me to go on another water ride next, so I headed for Rumba Rapids. This Intamin river rafting ride originally opened in 1987 as Thunder River, and was called Ribena Rumba Rapids from 2002 to 2006. Since 2007 it has operated as Rumba Rapids. I got into an empty boat, which floated around the flowing waterway and up the ramp back to the station. Part way around I noticed waves which gave the feeling of being on choppy water, but apart from that it was more a relaxing ride than a thrilling one. Reluctantly I limited myself to just one go on this as I wanted to go on Logger's Leap next.

Logger's Leap
I had a spot of bother finding my way from Rumba Rapids to Logger's Leap, and ended up walking around much of Thorpe Park to get there. When I eventually found Logger's Leap the ride was walk-on. I already had my splashsuit on when I got there, and obviously kept it on before getting into a vacant log. This Mack Rides log flume opened in 1989. My log sailed around the canal for some way before going up the first lift hill, and down a drop. The splash was nothing like as big as I thought it might be. My log continued for what seemed like eternity, until it eventually reached a second lift hill, followed by a drop, which produced another splash. Finally the log sailed on to the station. Back at the station the attendant asked if I wanted another go, I was allowed to remain in the same log for my second go. At the end of my second go I disembarked as I wanted go on other rides. Altogether this is a fun two-drop log flume. Comparing this to other two-drop log flumes I have ridden elsewhere, this gives a longer ride than the much more compact Wild Water at Brean Theme Park. Having left Logger's Leap I removed my splashsuit and didn't go on any more water rides the rest of the day.

X
An indoor roller coaster. This Vekoma Enigma is one of just two coasters of this model operating worldwide. It originally operated as X:\No Way Out from 23 March 1996 to the end of the 2012 season, during which time the train had five rows of seats which faced backwards to the direction of travel. Since the start of the 2013 season it has been operating as X, with new forward facing trains, and the building now illuminated by lasers and disco lights. There was no queue for X when I approached it late afternoon. I sat in the back row. This coaster was worth riding to say I'd ridden it this visit, but I wouldn't rate it highly. I limited myself to just one go as I wanted to go on other rides before closing time, which was now fast approaching.

Stealth
This Intamin AG Accelerator Coaster has been operating at Thorpe Park since 15 March 2006. With a maximum height of 205.1' (62.5 metres) it is the second tallest coaster currently operating in the UK and fourth tallest coaster currently operating in Europe. Its top speed of 80 mph makes it the fastest coaster currently operating in the UK and third fastest coaster currently operating in Europe.

After queuing for about five to ten minutes I got into a vacant row, but can't remember which one. The train set off, climbed the vertical lift hill, went over the top and down the vertical drop. Having landed, there was one more gentle up-down undulation, before the train was back at the station. Wow, a mega fun ride; one of the most exciting rides I went on all day. The snag was the fun was all over way too quickly! Reluctantly I limited myself to just one go. I resisted my temptation to have a second go as I still hadn't ridden Nemesis Inferno.

Having left Stealth I passed the tea cup ride. I resisted the temptation to cram in a go on that as it was now nearly closing time. It was now time for me to prioritise what I most wanted to ride in the remaining time, the ride I wanted to go on most of all being Nemesis Inferno.

Nemesis Inferno
This Bolliger & Mabillard Inverted Coaster (Custom) began operating 5 April 2003 and is currently one of 17 coasters of this model currently operating worldwide. I still hadn't been on this, and was hoping to get at least one go before ride closing time which was now just a few minutes away. Fortunately this was still open and walk-on, so I got into row 5. Once despatched the train set off around a clockwise downhill spiral around the volcano, then through a tunnel. After that it went up the lift hill, downhill, and around various bends. There was one loop-the-loop along the way. I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it, and didn't scream or shout "Mercy" (unlike my very first visit to Thorpe Park in June 2005).

Afterwards I still had time for one more go, despite having to recirculate around the exit and entry paths. Once again the ride was walk-on; I sat in row 6 this time. This ended up being my final ride of the day.

Passing through the shop after my second go, an announcement was made stating that Nemesis Inferno was now closed, therefore riders must not re-join its queue.

After leaving Nemesis Inferno I gradually headed towards the Dome and exit. Along the way I had a few more photos taken of me at various points in the Park. In addition I met Planenut again and briefly spoke to him again on the way out. I finally left Thorpe Park just before 17:30.

Returning to Staines
I walked to the bus stop, and as I expected, there was a long bus queue. Whilst I was waiting many more people joined the queue behind me. A Thorpe Park Express bus turned up at 17:49. Initially I thought I might not get on it, but I managed to get on. Once I was on there was still a long queue, it looked to me as there was no way they'd all get on. Several more people squeezed on to the bus before it finally left at 17:55. Once the bus had left Thorpe Park it went to Staines via Chertsey, and thus the evening journey back to Staines was much longer than the direct route from Staines to Thorpe Park in the morning. The bus finally reached Staines Bus Station at 18:38.

Birthday Dinner
My birthday fun continued back in Staines town centre. Around 18:50 I went to Harvester for my celebratory dinner. Once seated I placed my birthday card on the table and took time deciding what I wanted to eat and drink. Eventually I chose 7oz gammon steak under the meal deal. This included a fried egg, a pineapple slice, fries, peas and half a tomato, plus a fill-it-yourself salad bowl. I went to the salad bar to fill my salad bowl whilst waiting for my main course to arrive. To drink, I had a choice of soft drink, tea or coffee included in the price of the meal deal, or alternatively an alcoholic drink specified on the meal deal menu for an additional upgrade fee. Being as it was my birthday I upgraded to one pint of Carling. My main course was really delicious; the accompanying salad bowl made it more filling.

Having completed my main course I was ready to order a dessert. After all, a meal would not be complete without a dessert. The meal deal included either the default Sundae Best (which didn't include cream) at no extra charge, or any of the other sundaes from the main menu (all of which were topped with fluffy cream) for an additional upgrade fee. I upgraded to one of the sundaes which included cream; I ended up choosing Honeycomb Explosion. At the time of ordering I was asked if I wanted a candle put in it as it was my birthday. The waiter and waitress who brought it, complete with a burning candle in the top, sang "Happy birthday" to me. After that I blew the candle out, removed the candle and enjoyed the sundae. Its combination of creamy vanilla ice cream and Devon cream toffee, topped with fluffy cream, honeycomb pieces and Belgian chocolate sauce was a delicious treat to finish my meal.

Having finished my sundae I enjoyed the rest of my drink at a leisurely pace. By the time I had finished that it was almost time to head back to the station. Just before leaving Harvester I put my fleece and jogging bottoms on as it was now getting chilly outside.

Summary of my meal
Drink: One pint of Carling
Main course: 7oz gammon steak with egg, pineapple slice, fries, peas and half a tomato, and salad bowl
Dessert: Honeycomb Explosion Sundae

Journey Home
At 20:34 I left Harvester and began walking to Staines railway station. Once there I caught the 20:53 South West Trains train to Reading. Having reached Reading at 21:43 there was time for me to buy a takeaway Americano from Land's End Pasty Co. on the inter-platform footbridge before catching the 22:12 GWR train to Bath Spa.

Summing Up
Altogether a mega fun day out to mark my 44th birthday. Where better to spend one's birthday than enjoying the rides at The Nation's Thrill Capital? The weather was excellent, dry and mainly sunny all day, and sufficiently hot for just T-shirt and shorts from around midday. Effectively it was a summer-like day on the last day of September, which is officially an autumn day. Ride queues varied depending on the ride and time of day, but I tended to pick rides that which were walk-on or had very short queues, even though that meant leaving Stealth and Nemesis Inferno to the end of the day. An unexpected added bonus was meeting Planenut from the RCCGB and just before lunch and on my way out of the Park at closing time. Although we didn't have one ride together (which was a pity) it was great to talk to each other both times we met. The celebratory evening dinner at Harvester in Staines town centre was the grand finale to this special day.

Many people liked my self-designed birthday T-shirt. Some were puzzled when they first saw the front, until I showed the back. Wearing that throughout the day added to the fun of celebrating my birthday.

RCCGB Mega-GLOW-Mania Weekend 2015

Date: Friday 7 August to Sunday 9 August 2015
Venues: Folly Farm, Oakwood Theme Park, Heatherton World of Activities
Who Went: Me and a large number of other RCCGB members, including Andy and Christine Hine, Andy T, Death, Doug and Charlie Turner, Mark and Margo Lewis, Planenut, Ryan Hackett, Smiler, Wendy Evans.

DISCLAIMER: The above is not intended to be an exhaustive list of everyone who attended. It's a small sample of attendees; mainly those I spoke to and/or rode with at Folly Farm and/or Oakwood. I sincerely apologise to anyone I've not listed. Not everyone (whether or not listed above) attended all three Parks.

Introduction
The Club's annual visit to rural Pembrokeshire, primarily to visit Oakwood Theme Park. Just like in 2013 and 2014, the Oakwood visit was on Saturday when the Park was open to the public until 22:00, thereby enabling the Club to intend to end the day with its traditional dark ERS on Megafobia. Add-ons to Oakwood were Folly Farm near Kilgetty on Friday (including exclusive use of the Vintage Funfair and a cooked meal after closing time), and Heatherton World of Activities on Sunday. Just like last year, I attended Folly Farm and Oakwood, but for various reasons gave Heatherton a miss.

Thursday 6 August

Getting to Kilgetty
For me the weekend began with a train journey from Bath Spa to Kilgetty. I caught the 13:13 train from Bath Spa to Bristol Temple Meads, followed by the 13:46 train to Bristol Parkway, and from there the 14:08 train to Swansea. From Swansea I caught the 16:00 train bound for Pembroke Docks. As soon as I boarded that train I faced a dilemma: whether to go all the way to Kilgetty and get an evening meal there, or break my journey at Carmarthen and get dinner there somewhere before resuming my journey to Kilgetty later.

When the train reached Carmarthen at 16:59 I broke my journey to get an evening meal there. Initially I went for a walk around the town centre. Around 17:50 I went to Yr Hen Dderwen (Wetherspoon) for dinner. Since it was Curry Club night I decided to have a Curry Club meal. I chose large Chicken Jalfrezi curry, which included a portion of rice, a portion of mango chutney, one onion bhaji, one vegetable samosa, one naan bread and two puppodums. A drink was also included; I had a pint of John Smiths. For a supplementary fee I added British Bramley apple crumble with custard to my Curry Club deal for dessert.

Having left Yr Hen Dderwen I returned to the station in time for the 19:03 train to Kilgetty. I finally reached Kilgetty at 19:39. Once there I walked straight to the guest house I had booked to stay for three nights, checked in and relaxed in my room the rest of the evening.

Friday 7 August

Friday First Thing
Having awoke at 7:30 I had breakfast at 8:40 consisting of a choice of cereal, glass of orange juice, full traditional breakfast, four triangles of toast and a cafetiere of coffee.

Daytime
Having left the guest house where I was staying I walked to the centre of Kilgetty. When I got to the Co-op I considered whether to catch the bus, or walk the rest of the way, to Folly Farm. After some thought I caught the Haverfordwest bus which stopped outside Folly Farm around 10:15. Folly Farm was already open and the public were being admitted. The RCCGB was officially due to enter as a group at 11:00. I showed the receptionist my trip letter, badge and RCCGB membership card, and explained that I was on the trip. Another member of staff had to check the arrangements for paying, but when he returned I was admitted without further problems.

I began in the area across the road known as Follywood. There I saw various breeds of pig in Percy's Piggery, and had one go on the land train which followed a track past various animals. Back in the main part of the Park, I entered the Jolly Barn where I drew a sheep on the large chalk board on which visitors are welcome to draw farm animals.

Since it was currently dry and sunny, I headed for the zoo next and saved the indoor attractions for later, just in case the weather deteriorated. In the zoo I began with the giraffe enclosure. Near there I met Wendy Evans after midday. We spoke to each other for a bit and together saw the Penguin Coast area. Afterwards I saw the lions and emus. After a light snack (filled deli bread and a cup of coffee) at Carousel Café, I saw the rest of the animals around the zoo, including Bactrian camels, African spurred tortoise, red river hog, ostriches, reindeer and the African Aviary. Having left the zoo I had a whippy ice cream from an ice cream kiosk.

Late afternoon I walked around the Jolly Barn seeing farm animals including ponies, sheep and goats. Around 16:30 I enjoyed playing on all parts of Carousel Woods indoor play structure until closing time of 17:30, including the 4-lane Bumper Slide, tube slides and multi-level towers. A fun way to round off normal opening time.

Exclusive Fair Session
The Park officially closed at 17:30. For us the best was yet to follow: our Exclusive Fair Session in the Vintage Funfair. Together we rode the 1937 Coronation Speedway, 1950s Caterpillar Ride, Rock n' Roll Waltzer, Jets and Ghost Train once each. This was followed by three runs of the 1938 Dodgem Track; some members managed to be accommodated on more than one run. I had one go on the dodgems solo and one go as a passenger with Nev driving.

It was now time for dinner in the Funfair Restaurant. Members had fish and chips, sausage and chips or veggie burger and chips (specified when booking this trip); I had fish and chips. Nev also gave a speech. After dinner we had more rides: 1936 Lakin Swirl, Chair-o-Plane, Folly Farm's Famous Gallopers and 1950s Cyclone Twist once each (however some including me were lucky enough to get two goes on Cyclone Twist). To round off the EFS we had the chance to walk the Brooklyn Cakewalk; I managed four goes.

Rest of Friday
Once the EFS ended at 20:11, the day was over and we all had to return to the car park. Since I was staying in Kilgetty this time I walked back; doing so took me just over 20 minutes. Back in my room I relaxed the rest of the evening.

Altogether a worthwhile appetiser to Mega-Glow-Mania at Oakwood. I particularly enjoyed playing on Carousel Woods indoor play structure for about an hour late afternoon. Best of all was after 17:30: a few vintage rides, a meal, and more vintage rides ending with the Brooklyn Cakewalk. Basically the visit to Folly Farm can be summed up as a leisurely day around the farm, zoo and other attractions, culminating in a spin on the vintage rides early evening, as a warm-up to Oakwood the day after. Furthermore the weather was quite good; sunny from first thing until mid-afternoon, cloudy for a couple of hours and sunny again rom late afternoon until dusk. At least it was dry all day. Many thanks to Nev for arranging this day, including EFS, at Folly Farm. Thanks also to the ride operators for running the rides for us, and caterers for providing the meal, after normal closing time.

Saturday 8 August

Saturday First Thing
I had an early breakfast at 8:15, which consisted of cereal, a glass of orange juice, beans on toast and a cafetiere of coffee. Just after 8:30 Mark and Margo arrived to give me a lift to Oakwood.

Welcome to Oakwood
When Mark, Margo and I arrived, several other members were already waiting outside the front of Oakwood. A few minutes later it was time for everyone to enter the Park. Nev gave a short speech before everyone entered.

Morning ERS
The day began with a one hour ERS on Oakwood's famous wooden coaster Megafobia During this hour I enjoyed five goes; I sat next to Smiler on one go and Planenut on another go.

Morning Free Time
When the ERS ended, members dispersed around Oakwood. I rode Megafobia once more, thinking it would be my sixth go during the ERS, but the attendant said the ERS had now finished and this was the first train of normal time. After this go I wasn't intending to ride Megafobia again until the evening ERS. Little did I know at this moment that the evening ERS would not happen! Next I enjoyed four goes on Treetops Coaster followed by two goes on Speed. After a short break I enjoyed two goes on the drop tower Bounce, followed by one go on Teacups.

After that I went to The Little Darlings' Café in Neverland for a much-needed coffee. As I was nearing the end of my coffee Nev and Wendy Evans entered. I spoke to them inside and just outside the café. After that I had one go on Tink's Flying School, two goes on Crocodile Coaster (both of which were in the back row) and one more go on Tink's Flying School.

Baseball
Around 13:30 the Club gathered on the field at the front of the Park for baseball. When I got there some people were already practising. Nev asked all those who wanted to play to get into one of two teams, Woodies and Steelies. I played for Woodies. As usual Nev played on the Woodies team. Both sides batted and fielded twice each. The final score was Woodies 415 Steelies 10.

Afternoon and Evening Free Time
After the baseball ended, members returned to the camp site for a rest or returned to the Park. Back in the Park, I went to The Little Darlings' Café for a hot dog and Sprite. My first ride after the baseball was one go on Oakwood Aerodrome. Next I donned my all-in-one splashsuit to have one go on Drenched. However, I didn't bother standing on the bridge afterwards to watch a later boat land (unlike Mega-GLOW-Mania 2012 and 2013). Having removed my splashsuit I returned to Neverland to ride Neverland Chase and Crocodile Coaster once each.

Next I enjoyed both Waterfall slides once each (left slide followed by right slide, as seen from the top). On both goes I sailed across the landing pool without keeling over. Afterwards I was hoping to ride all four Snake River Falls slides once each in sequence. Unfortunately only the outer tube slides Cobra and Python were in use; the two open-top ones in the middle were closed. Presumably that explained why the queues for both Cobra and Python were quite long. Anyway I enjoyed one go on Cobra followed by one go on Python. I wore my splashsuit to prevent me getting wet whilst on Waterfall and Snake River Falls.

Next I enjoyed one go on Bobsleigh. Since its normal queue line was being rebuilt a temporary queue line was in operation. Whilst waiting I met Andy T, he rode behind me. Riding this on a dry, sunny evening was much better and easier than in the wet conditions during Mega-GLOW-Mania 2014. After that Andy T and I headed for the Boating Lake; we went on one of the pedaloes together. Pedalling once around the lake was quite hard going. Afterwards Andy T and I headed into Neverland. He looked after my rucksack whilst I enjoyed two goes on Skull Rock log flume. Unsurprisingly I wore my splashsuit to prevent me getting wet on Skull Rock. Having removed my splashsuit Andy T and I rode Tink's Flying School once; I sat in one plane, whereas he sat in another.

Next I explored Lost Boys' Adventure in Neverland. This includes three tube slides set in a mound; I went down the blue, red and yellow slides once each. Afterwards I had one go on Oakwood Aerodrome, followed by four goes on Moon Landing drop slide. Having left Moon Landing, Nev and others challenged me to ride Waterfall. Before they could stop me, I grabbed my splashsuit from my rucksack and put it on when I reached the top of the stairs. Once ready I went down both slides once each (right slide followed by left slide, as seen from the top). Having removed my splashsuit and collected my rucksack, I headed for Speed. Its queue was longer than I'd have liked, but I waited, and enjoyed one go. Unexpectedly this turned out to be my final ride of the day!

Power Failure
After leaving Speed, I fancied a go on Treetops Coaster. When I got there I discovered the power had just gone off park-wide. Feeling hungry I hurried to Woody's Burger Bar, and asked they had any burgers or fries cooked and ready to serve, only to be told they couldn't sell them as their tills were down!

Obviously most rides could not operate without electricity. The only rides still open were the pedaloes (which are self-propelled by riders) and Moon Landing drop slide. Furthermore the stage was silent as the band could not perform without power. RCCGB members and the general public wondered what would happen next. I hoped the power would be restored as soon as possible in order to get something to eat from Woody's Burger Bar.

At 20:58 the stage lights suddenly came on. Momentarily I thought the power had been restored, but the stage performer said the power was still down. He started singing to keep people amused whilst the power was still down. The band must have been using a generator to power the stage lights and sound system. As it began getting dark Moon Landing drop slide was closed due to insufficient light at the launch point.

Firework Display
The rides were originally intended to be in operation until around 21:45, and the After Dark fireworks display of and lights, set to music, was due to take place around 21:50. Just after 21:30 the band ceased performing, and the firework display took place early. Despite the power cut, they were still able to let off the fireworks and have accompanying music. However there was a pause in the fireworks mid-way through; presumably that was to be filled with lights and lasers which didn't appear.

After Fireworks
When the fireworks ended, people were told to leave slowly and carefully due to the street lights not working. RCCGB members including me waited near the entrance to Megafobia for further instructions. Without mains power it was impossible to run Megafobia for the ERS, which was to include party music and disco lights. Nonetheless several members had already activated glow sticks.

Around 21:45 Nev formally announced that it was necessary to cancel the ERS. He said this was the first time since 1996 the evening Megafobia ERS has been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. At this point most members left the Park. Since Mark and Margo were taking me back to Kilgetty, I waited with Margo near Megafobia entrance whilst Mark collected his disco lights from the station. Suddenly lights came on around the Park, and a recurring audio announcement on Bobsleigh could be heard. Evidently the power had been restored! Sadly it was now too late to recall everyone and have the ERS after all.

Rest of Saturday
Back at the car park, Mark and Margo gave me a lift to Kilgetty. Along the way they took me into Narberth so I could get something to eat somewhere. I managed to get takeaway chips with cheese from a kebab shop just before its closing time, and consumed them on the way back to Kilgetty. After our final goodbyes I returned to my room, about an hour earlier than expected!

Altogether a mega fun day at Oakwood. It's a pity the power cut forced the dark ERS on Megafobia to be cancelled, but it's important to stress that neither the RCCGB nor Oakwood were to blame for that. The rest of the day was as amazing as it could be; the Club still had its morning ERS on Megafobia and its baseball game lunchtime. I particularly enjoyed riding the four roller coasters I was able to ride (Megafobia, Treetops Coaster, Speed, Crocodile Coaster). It was also great adding the Boating Lake (pedalo boats) to my ride count, and riding many non-coaster rides again (e.g. Bounce, Drenched and Waterfall) which I've ridden previously. Furthermore it was great meeting Nev, Doug and Charlie, Mark and Margo, Wendy Evans and others again. Finally the weather was excellent; dry and sunny all day, a vast improvement on the wet weather from mid-afternoon onwards last year. Many thanks to Nev for organising this trip to Oakwood, the staff for running Megafobia before opening time, and to Mark and Margo for kindly giving me lifts from Kilgetty to Oakwood in the morning and back in the evening.

Sunday 9 August

Introduction
The final day of Mega-Glow-Mania weekend 2015. Mid-morning some members met at Heatherton World of Activities to enjoy go-karting and/or other activities available there. Nev even arranged an EGS (exclusive go-kart session) for those interested; according to the trip invitation it was billed to run from 10.00 to 11.30. For various reasons I gave Heatherton a miss. The following outlines how I spent Sunday.

Sunday First Thing
Having awoke I got ready, packed my belongings and had breakfast around 8:30. I had the same selection as Friday morning including a full cooked breakfast. I enjoyed it at a more relaxed pace than Friday and Saturday.

From Kilgetty to Swansea
I reached Kilgetty station around 11:15, intending to catch the 11:26 train to Carmarthen. Since Kilgetty is a request stop, I had to signal to the driver for the train to stop. Having reached Carmarthen I caught the 12:24 train to Swansea, and got there at 13:16. Once there I walked straight to Swansea LC.

Swansea LC Water Park
I reached the LC reception around 13:50. Unlike last year, I was able to get in straightaway this time, so I bought a ticket for the session starting at 14:15. Without further ado I proceeded to the changing rooms where I managed to find a tall locker big enough to contain my large holdall, rucksack and laptop bag.

I was in the pool area from 14:15 to 16:27, during which time I enjoyed sixteen goes on the Aqua Tube (closed narrow tube slide) and five goes on the Aqua Slide (wide open top slide). Best of all I enjoyed three goes on the Master Blaster roller coaster water slide, which is my highest number on that to-date for one visit to Swansea LC. However I didn't go in the Wave Pool or Lazy River at all this visit, as I wanted to have as many slides as I could. Altogether a wet and wild way to round off Mega-Glow-Mania weekend.

Evening Meal
Around 17:00 I went to The Bank Statement (Wetherspoons) hoping to have a Sunday Club Meal, but unfortunately they had run out of those earlier. After a quick look at the menu for alternatives, I chose faggots, chips and peas with gravy for main course, waffle with ice cream and maple syrup for dessert and half a Heineken to drink. Altogether a delicious evening meal to round off my weekend in Wales.

Journey Home
Having left The Bank Statement (Wetherspoons) I returned to the station with time to spare for the 18:24 London Paddington train. I reached Bristol Parkway at 20:35 to discover that the 20:57 train to Bristol Temple Meads was cancelled. Consequently I caught the 21:21 Plymouth train to Bristol Temple Meads. Thankfully when I got to Bristol Temple Meads at 21:37 I had just a few minutes to get on the next train to Bath Spa, which left Bristol Temple Meads at 21:47 and reached Bath Spa at 22:01.

Power failure around 20:40 Saturday evening which eventually forced the dark ERS on Megafobia to be cancelled.

Summing Up
Altogether fun-packed long weekend away. It was great to visit Folly Farm and Oakwood for the fourth year running and thus ride many of their rides (particularly Oakwood's Megafobia) again. Many thanks again to Nev for arranging the trips to Folly Farm and Oakwood (also Heatherton for those who went), and to Mark and Margo for kindly giving me lifts from Kilgetty to Oakwood and back on Saturday.

Mega-Glow-Mania weekend 2015 can be likened to a three-course meal as follows:
Starter: Folly Farm on Friday
Main course: Oakwood on Saturday
Dessert: Heatherton (or in my case Swansea LC) on Sunday

One other bit of trivia worth mentioning: I went down at least one slide of some sort Friday, Saturday and Sunday as follows:
Friday: Carousel Woods Bumper Slide and tube slides at Folly Farm.
Saturday: Moon Landing drop slide and Lost Boys' Adventure tube slides at Oakwood.
Sunday: Aqua Tube, Aqua Slide and Master Blaster water slides at Swansea LC Water Park.
